Transport System in Cambodia

Cambodia is relatively a large country and as such the inhabitants as well as visitors need means of travelling from one location to another or from and into Cambodia. The country has a reasonably decent transport system considering its past history. The country boasts of a number of airports, a reliable railway system, a network of roads and a river system to facilitate river transport.  All these means of transport are expounded in greater details below.
First let us look into water transport. Cambodia has over 1900 km of navigable waterways that play a very important part in the country’s transport system. Cambodia has two major ports and five minor ports.  Water transport is the preferred means of transport to areas that have poor roads or not railway network. Currently the two destinations that mostly use water transport from Phnom Penh are Siem Reap and Chau Doc.
Next let us consider road transport. Cambodia has a road network that is approximately 38,000 kilometers long.  The road network is actually the major mode of transportation in Cambodia mainly because of the cost, speed, flexibility, and comfort. The best way of travelling to different parts and provinces is by bus. There are numerous bus service companies that offer transportation from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap, Battambang, Sihanoukville, Kompong Cham and Kratie. Besides buses, Cars and motor cycles also operate on the country’s road network. Most locals and tourists prefer this other means of transport as they are cheaper and reliable especially when travelling over small distances.
Next let us look into the railway system. Cambodia’s railway system no longer offers passenger transport services to almost all areas with the exception of the Phnom Penh to Battambang Province route.  Though cheaper than most other transportation means, it tends to take longer and therefore less convenient.
Finally let consider air transport. The airlines in Cambodia offer both domestic and international transport to different destinations. Even though this mode of travel is costly, it is also the fastest and most convenient.  Flights are however limited by the number and locality of airports. Most domestic flights are between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.  There are also helicopter services from and to Phnom Penh to a number of destinations.
